Working as a video game performer

Artificial intelligence & integration in video games

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

There is no single definition of AI. The UK government defines AI as: “technologies with the ability to perform tasks that would otherwise require human intelligence”. There is no single definition of AI. Generative AI is a subfield of artificial intelligence that can create new content, such as text, images, audio, or code, by learning the patterns and structure of the input data. Generative AI algorithms can generate outputs that resemble human-created content or synthetic media.

How is AI impacting the games industry?

AI is playing a growing role in the gaming industry. For example, it can be used to develop intelligent virtual characters (mainly non-player characters) and enhance game graphics. AI-powered game engines are adapting gameplay based on player behaviour, creating dynamic and engaging experiences. We are seeing the increasing use of synthetic voices and AI is also being used in relation to performance and motion capture. For example, sophisticated technology uses sensors and cameras to capture the movements and expressions of actors, which are then translated into animations for characters in games or movies. AI algorithms are then employed to improve the accuracy and realism of captured data.

What is integration?

Integration is the process of incorporating artificial intelligence systems and algorithms into a video game. The meaning of integration can vary depending on the context in which it is used. For Voice Actors and P-cap performers, integration entails uploading a performer's work into a data library with a view to use it beyond the original scope of their contracted engagement. Performers will often find their work automatically ends up in a data library, to be used and amalgamated in many different productions, without further notice or payment.

What should performers do to protect themselves from unwanted integration?

Before you accept any work, make sure the use of integration is clearly set in your contracts and use the Equity Videogames Recommended Rate Card to negotiate an appropriate fee.

We also recommend reading Equity’s AI Toolkit and use our guidance material to help you protect your rights in this evolving landscape. If you do not want your material to be exploited using AI technology, use our template clauses as part of your contract negotiation.
