As the burlesque industry continues to grow and attract new talent, there has been an increase in individuals offering training programs and mentorships that promise rapid success, stardom, or prestigious performance opportunities—often at significant personal cost to the performer. In response the Equity Variety and Circus Committee have issued the following statement:
While professional development is an essential part of our craft, Equity is concerned by recent reports of exploitative practices targeting early-career performers, including:
- Unpaid performance slots in ticketed events—where audiences are charged full price, but performers receive no share of the revenue.
- Emotional manipulation or “love bombing” to create urgency or dependence (“You’re amazing—if you just book a few sessions, I’ll make you a star”).
- High-pressure sales tactics encouraging performers to invest thousands in further coaching, often with unclear deliverables or inflated promises.
- A lack of transparency around how “success” is defined and measured in these programs.
We urge all performers to be cautious and informed when entering into professional development agreements. Before committing to any course or mentorship, ask:
- Are performers being fairly compensated for their time and talent in public shows?
- Are the outcomes of this training clearly defined and realistic?
- Is the coach or organiser recognised and respected within the wider community?
- Are you being rushed into decisions without time to reflect or seek advice?
Equity is committed to supporting ethical, transparent opportunities for performers at all stages of their careers. If you believe you’ve been misled or exploited, you can contact the union in confidence for support or advice.
Let’s build an industry where creativity thrives—without coercion, pressure, or exploitation.
