This Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex. The theme for this year's HMD is 'For a better future'.
Commenting Paul W Fleming, Equity General Secretary, said: “Equity today marks Holocaust Memorial Day, and we embrace this year’s theme: For a better future. We take the time today to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust and the critically important lessons to oppose fascism, prejudice and hate.
“Alongside the global and UK trade union movement, Equity is proud of its record in actively and openly opposing fascism - a record which has seen trades unionists throughout the last hundred years fall victim to it. We send a resounding message today that our commitment to equality and fair treatment for all artists in our industries is as unequivocal today as it has always been. We remain unflinching in our commitment to fight antisemitism, ableism, racism, homophobia and xenophobia in all their forms.
“On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, we remember the survivors and the many millions who did not survive. We remember that the horrors of the Holocaust did not prevent further genocides, and we stand with all those affected by historic and modern genocides across the globe in our collective fight for a better future.”
