Equity has joined hundreds of national and local organisations, including sister trade unions, in affiliating to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).
The decision was made by the Equity Council at their November meeting and is part of the union’s ongoing solidarity work dedicated to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East and offering practical support to artists and workers affected by the violence.
The PSC is a long-running campaign group bringing together organisations in the UK dedicated to securing Palestinian human rights. PSC campaigns for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine and for peace and justice for everyone living in the region.
The Equity Council also agreed to bring forward a £3,000 donation to Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Centre in Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem. For several years Equity has contributed to Alrowwad at Christmas time and Alrowwad’s founder Abdelfattah Abusrour addressed Equity’s conference this year and was awarded Honorary Life Membership.
Commenting Tom Peters, Equity Policy Officer said “Equity has a long and proud history of international solidarity. Just as we stood against apartheid in South Africa in the last century, today we stand against apartheid in Palestine.
“As a union we will always stand against injustice, occupation and genocide; and we will always be in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
“We seek justice and freedom from violence and occupation for all artists and workers in the region and will continue to work with and support our sister unions in Israel and Palestine.
“Affiliating to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign will allow an official Equity presence on PSC demonstrations. We will also focus on Palestine as part of our ongoing development of a political education programme”.
Equity branches are encouraged to affiliate to the PSC and can do so here.
