We represent LGBT+ members in Equity.
The LGBT+ Committee advises Equity’s Council on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and other queer members and takes action to promote their interests on both industrial matters and wider social issues affecting them. This might include anything from risks of harassment and violence facing LGBT+ members, at work and in public, to producing casting guidelines for producers working with LGBT+ performers.
We also arrange Equity’s representation at LGBT+ events, such as the TUC LGBT+ Conference, Black Pride UK and Trans Pride.
The Committee convenes the LGBT+ Network, which any LGBT+ member can join.
Our priorities
To reinvigorate the network by holding events to promote the union among drag artists, grow its membership and discuss how the union can support them.
To build upon the Committee’s work responding to far-right violence and threats against Drag Queen Story Hour and other queer artists by:
• Developing political education for members on how to speak about the far-right threat to employers and colleagues and how to counter far-right narratives and influence;
• Working with the TUC’s anti-far-right programme to collaborate with other unions and progressive organisations on the wider trade union response;
• Creating best practice guidelines on safety for performers at risk of violence and threats from the far-right.
To expand the Network’s membership and organise at least three events for the Network during this Committee’s mandate that create a space for our LGBT+ members to inform the Committee’s work and move them towards activism in the union.
To attend branch meetings and speak about the Committee’s work, the LGBT+ Network and how branches can get involved.
