Equity sends solidarity to American unions over California wildfires

Equity has sent messages of solidarity to our sister unions in America

Equity has sent messages of solidarity to our sister unions in America extending our solidarity and wishes for all those affected by the wildfires in California.

Equity’s sister unions SAG-AFTRA and Actors Equity Association (“US Equity”) have members who work heavily in film, TV, gaming and theatre and are especially impacted by the fierce fires which have torn through LA and the Hollywood hills areas of California. Equity general secretary Paul W Fleming has written directly to our sister unions and also extends solidarity to the other entertainment unions and guilds and all those who have lost loved ones, homes and workplaces to the intense wildfires.

The Equity for a Green New Deal network have filmed a video on behalf of union members, saying: “We, actors and art workers at Equity send our solidarity to our sister unions, SAG AFTRA and American Equity, at this time.”

Equity members recognise how the deadly wildfires in California are destroying the lives of US TV, film and gaming workers, along with crew members and cleaners, background actors and drivers who are seeing their homes lost, and their communities devastated.
Equity for a Green New Deal points to the fires not being a natural event but instead being caused by climate change driven by the actions of oil and gas companies.

The message delivered by Equity members in the video is: “We have all the solutions we need to build a truly fair and safe world. We will continue to work within our union and collaborate internationally to combat the most destructive effects of climate breakdown, such as extreme weather events like these. Our industry is already coming together for a fairer and greener future for all. Once again, our solidarity to all those affected.”
